Father's Day

June, 1980

Irene and the boys are at KMart finding things for Father’s Day and settle on some after shave for Ned.

In the greeting cards they find a funny one for him as well, then Irene suggests they pick one out to send to Paps.

Nick picks up a real fancy one with an shiny classic sedan, maybe a Rolls Royce sitting in a well-manicured upscale yard with GRANDFATHER across the top in gold lettering. The writing inside is in cursive so he asks her to read it. After a couple of sentences the word love appears and without thinking Nick blurts out,

“NO!”

Irene stops reading, and she suggests they find something else.

Tim asks, “Why not get them both the same card?”

Nick nods, but feels confused, and they get two of the same card with one going to Paps.

Ten years later Nick tries not to think about why it would have been so bad to send him the one with the car.
